Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2025
At Joventara, we understand that learning to write better code means trusting us with your information. This privacy policy explains what data we collect when you use our platform, why we need it, and how we protect it. We're based in South Africa and follow local data protection standards, but our commitment to your privacy goes beyond compliance. We believe you should know exactly what happens to your information, so we've written this in plain language without the usual legal jargon.
What information we collect
When you sign up for Joventara, we collect the basics needed to create your account and deliver the course content. This includes your name, email address, and password. If you enroll in paid courses, we also process payment information through secure third-party providers. We never store complete credit card details on our servers.
As you work through courses, we track your progress automatically. This means we know which lessons you've completed, how you scored on quizzes, and which topics you're currently studying. We collect this data so you can pick up where you left off and so we can show you relevant recommendations. Your code submissions in practice exercises are stored temporarily while our system evaluates them, then archived as part of your learning history.
- Account details: name, email, password (encrypted), profile preferences
- Learning activity: course progress, quiz results, exercise submissions, time spent on lessons
- Technical data: IP address, browser type, device information, access times
- Communication records: support messages, feedback forms, survey responses
- Payment information: transaction details processed through secure payment providers
How we use your information
Everything we collect serves a specific purpose related to making Joventara work better for you. Your account information lets you log in and access courses. Progress tracking helps us save your place and show relevant content. Technical data helps us fix bugs and improve performance. We analyze learning patterns across all users to identify which teaching approaches work best, but this analysis uses aggregated data that doesn't identify individual students.
We don't sell your personal information to advertisers or data brokers. We don't use your email to spam you with marketing messages unrelated to your courses. We don't share your learning progress with employers without your explicit permission.
We might send you emails about course updates, new content related to topics you're studying, or important platform changes. You can adjust these notification preferences in your account settings. Some communications, like security alerts or changes to terms of service, are essential and can't be disabled because they protect your account.
Data storage and security
Your information lives on secure servers located in South Africa. We use industry-standard encryption for data transmission and storage. Passwords are hashed using modern algorithms, which means even our team can't see your actual password. We maintain regular backups to prevent data loss from technical failures.
Encryption Standard
TLS 1.3 for data transmission, AES-256 for storage
Access Control
Role-based permissions, multi-factor authentication for staff
Data Retention
Active accounts maintained indefinitely, inactive data reviewed annually
Despite our security measures, no system is completely impenetrable. If we ever experience a data breach that affects your information, we'll notify you within 72 hours and explain what data was compromised and what steps we're taking. We maintain detailed security logs and conduct regular audits to identify potential vulnerabilities before they become problems.
Your rights and choices
You control your data. You can access your account dashboard anytime to review what information we have about you. If something's incorrect, you can update it directly. Want to download everything we have on you? Contact our support team and we'll generate a complete export within seven business days.
What you can do:
- Request a copy of all data we hold about you in machine-readable format
- Correct inaccurate information in your profile or learning history
- Delete your account and associated data permanently
- Withdraw consent for optional data processing activities
- Object to automated decision-making in grading or content recommendations
- Restrict processing of your data while we investigate a concern
If you delete your account, we remove your personal information from active systems within 30 days. Some data might persist in backup systems for up to 90 days before complete deletion. We're legally required to keep certain transaction records for tax purposes, but these are stored separately without connection to your learning activity.
Cookies and tracking
Joventara uses cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. These are essential cookies that make the platform function properly. We also use analytics cookies to understand how people use the site, which helps us identify confusing interfaces or technical problems. You can disable analytics cookies in your browser settings without affecting core functionality.
We don't use advertising cookies or share data with social media platforms. Third-party services like payment processors might set their own cookies when you interact with their embedded tools, but these are governed by their privacy policies, not ours.
Sharing with third parties
We work with carefully selected service providers who help us run Joventara. Payment processing companies handle transactions securely. Email service providers send course notifications and password resets. Cloud infrastructure providers host our servers. These companies only access data necessary for their specific function and are contractually required to protect your information.
We will disclose information if legally required by court order or law enforcement, but we'll notify you first unless prohibited by law. We've never received a government data request that we couldn't challenge in court.
If Joventara is acquired by another company or merges with another education platform, your data would transfer to the new entity. We'd notify you 30 days before any such change and give you the option to delete your account before the transfer occurs.
Changes to this policy
As we add new features or legal requirements change, we might need to update this privacy policy. When we make significant changes that affect how we handle your data, we'll email you directly and display a prominent notice on the platform. Minor clarifications or legal updates will be posted here with an updated revision date. We recommend reviewing this policy periodically, especially if you're concerned about data privacy.
Questions about privacy?
